Collections
Nunavut has a rich and vibrant cultural heritage, including Inuit cultural belongings that form part of Museum collections around the world. These belongings embody Inuit values, histories, and traditions that hold important stories of Inuit resilience, adaptability, and creativity.
The Nunavut Agreement establishes IHT and the Government of Nunavut (GN) as co-owners of the archaeological collections from Nunavut that are currently stored at the Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) in Gatineau. These collection in addition to ethnography, art, palaeontology, botany, zoology, and archival materials that are owned by the GN. Together comprise the Nunavut Collection that includes over 200,000 items that will return home to Nunavut once the Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre (NIHC) in Iqaluit is open.
